There are no hard and fast rules about selecting the size of a ceiling fan.
The desirable level of air flow in a given location and the general appearance of the fan is a matter of personal choice.
As a guide, rooms upto 4m x 4m a 1200mm blade fan is satisfactory, 5m x 6m – 1300mm or greater. For areas larger than 30sq.m you should consider installing two or more fans depending upon the layout of the room

The number of blades on a fan has very little to do with efficiency, making it a matter of personal design taste to choice a particular number of blades, rather than a decision of performance. The performance of a ceiling fan is determined by 3 main factors: 1. Motor speed (RPM's). 2. Blade design & pitch (angle of the blade in relation to the motor). 3. Distance between Ceiling Fan blades and the ceiling.

Devices, such as, hang sure canopies, ball joint type and j-hooks allow the ceiling fan to be hung from a sloped or cathedral ceiling (raked ceiling – typical range 28deg to 45deg)
They also allow the Ceiling Fan to find its own true centre of gravity, which reduces wobbling and noises caused by undesired wobbling.

Typical ceiling fans rods are around 150mm allowing the fan to rotate at a minimum of 300mm from ceiling. The more area above the ceiling fan will assist in air flow. Limitations however on the height of the fan from the floor often restrict options. There are building regulations that state ceiling fans have to have 2.1m of floor clearance for safety. Typical ceiling heights in Australia are 2.4m.
